Sports Premium

PE and Sport at St John of Beverley RC Primary School

We are committed to developing and maintaining the health and well being of our pupils and believe it is important to provide high quality PE lessons and extra-curricular activities.

Our Curriculum

We deliver a wide range of PE to pupils aiming to engage and inspire them, but also just to allow them to have fun keeping fit.  They develop essential physical skills pus those of sportsmanship and being a team player.  All PE is taught by the class teacher and in some cases also by a specialist Teaching Assistant.  In addition we have outside providers in to deliver specialist subjects.

Extra-Curricular and out of school activities

St John of Beverley offers an extensive extra-curricular programme and includes after-school clubs including football, netball, dance, badminton, athletics and Change 4 Life.  We monitor participation and are committed to finding a sport for every child.  As such, we regularly ask the pupils what activities they would like to do in the future.

In the last year we have competed in many inter-school competitions including:  football, netball, badminton, cross-country, orienteering, speed-stacking, athletics, rugby, dance, rounders, swimming, cricket and dodge ball.  We are proud to say that this year two-thirds of KS2 children have taken part in an inter-school festival or competition.

Sports Premium Funding

Purpose of the funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.  Possible uses of the funding include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits

We aim to utilise the Sports Premium Funding to enhance our PE curriculum as well as our extra-curricular activities on a long-term basis.

We are developing fitness and skills through play, across all ages - In Foundation Stage by enhancing the outdoor play area by purchasing equipment to develop balance, agility and co-ordination.

We are also investing in new equipment for the playground to ensure more physical activity during play times.

We will continue to offer high quality continuous professional development for all our staff (not just teachers), together with class workshops by specialist trainers in dance and fitness.  This will benefit the children and their health and well-being.
